We size up surfing accessories the way a working surfer does before handing over money: against the conditions the gear is actually rated for. A leash is judged on its published cord and the reports that come back from heavy surf. Wax is judged across the whole water-temperature range it is sold for, not just the warm end. Every call is drawn from manufacturer specifications, long-run owner reports, and published reviews.
Who writes these picks
Swellkin is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the Swellkin name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Session performance
How gear is reported to hold up in real surf at the wave size, water temperature, and session length the category demands. A leash rating cites published cord diameter and breaking strength, not brand reputation.
Fit and comfort
An ankle cuff that slips costs you focus. We weigh documented sizing, cuff and strap design, and the comfort and slippage patterns that repeat across owner reports over a full session, including how a piece works alongside the rest of your kit.
Build quality and durability
Swivel corrosion, velcro wear, EVA foam delamination, and neoprene degradation are the real failure modes. We track how often each one turns up in owner reports and published reviews, and we rank a product down when the pattern is consistent.
Value at the correct wave size
A budget leash in small surf is a different proposition from a budget leash in overhead-plus conditions. We contextualize price against the conditions the product is suited for.
Eco and supply chain claims
When a brand claims recycled materials or biodegradable construction, we check whether the claim is specific (percentages, certifications) or marketing language. We name the difference.
How our picks work
