How we test and score
We review surfing accessories the way a working surfer evaluates them: in the water, across sessions, in the conditions the gear is rated for. A leash gets tested in heavy surf. Wax gets evaluated across water temperatures, not just in warm conditions.
Who reviews these picks
Tyler Garner, Founder and lead reviewer
Tyler has surfed for over fifteen years across California, Hawaii, and cold-water breaks in the Pacific Northwest. He tests accessories in real sessions and writes from the lineup, not from a desk.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Session performance
How gear performs in real surf: correct wave size, water temperature, and session length for the product category. A leash rating cites cord diameter and breaking strength, not brand reputation.
Fit and comfort
An ankle cuff that slips costs you focus. We evaluate how well accessories stay in place, how comfortable they are across a full session, and how they interact with other gear.
Build quality and durability
Swivel corrosion, velcro wear, EVA foam delamination, and neoprene degradation are the real failure modes. We note them honestly and update ratings when quality changes.
Value at the correct wave size
A budget leash in small surf is a different proposition from a budget leash in overhead-plus conditions. We contextualize price against the conditions the product is suited for.
Eco and supply chain claims
When a brand claims recycled materials or biodegradable construction, we check whether the claim is specific (percentages, certifications) or marketing language. We name the difference.
How our picks work
Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.
What we never do
- We take no payment, free product, or sponsorship in exchange for coverage or a ranking. There are no paid placements.
- We say what is wrong with a product, not just what is right. Every pick lists real tradeoffs.
- We match recommendations to your situation (fitment, skill level, budget, and use case) instead of pushing one product on everyone.
- We keep our picks current and re-check them as products and prices change.
